Revolutionizing cancer care for patients

Revolutionizing cancer care for patients

Nov 2023

The Colorectal Cancer (CRC) cohort is a "lighthouse" collection from the partner Institute of Pathology at Medical University of Graz. It comprises colorectal cancer resection samples in form of histological slides, whole slide images from this stained FFPE tissue sections and a wide range of patient records and outcomes in terms of survival and death rates.

In an interview, two experts from experts highlight the importance of the CRC whole slide image cohort and the innovative results achieved through the use of AI algorithms, taking diagnosis and treatment to a new level.

They report about:

  • the history of the CRC Cohort
  • it's importance in enabling high-quality research and innovation to improve colorectal cancer treatment
  • and how patients and industry can benefit from the CRC Cohort

Watch the video and listen to the interview to learn about how patient data were turned into a valuable research resource with the support of initiatives such as the Austrian Genome Program and BBMRI-ERIC.

Digital pathology and artificial intelligence (AI)

Digital pathology and AI-based image analysis are gaining increasing importance in medical diagnostics. The use of AI algorithms is a significant development and has already led to the identification of new biomarkers. AI predictions improve patient stratification in treatments and clinical trials, reduce data noise, and improve therapy assessment. Although the innovative AI approach is not yet a commercial product, it holds great promise. To protect patient data, a trusted environment like BBMRI-ERIC is essential to ensure data anonymization and patient privacy in modern biobanking practice.
